Door de bochten op de bocht (Holven)
Vanaf zondag 2 mei 1909 werd er op deze plaats door de bochten
geschuurd, niet met de auto, maar met de fiets. Op die dag was er
de officiële opening van de Geelse velodroom. Indertijd waren er al
verschillende velodrooms in het land, maar in 1908 werd er in Geel
gestart met de bouw van de grootste niet-overdekte wielerbaan.
Tijdens de opening stond er een snelkoers, een afvallingskoers ,
een match in drie reeksen , een fondkoers en een koers voor
motocycletten met de toenmalige Belgische kampioen Jan olieslagers
op het programma.
Deze velodroom ‘De Heidebloem’ genaamd kende een
glorietijd voor de eerste wereldoorlog uitbrak. Buiten
wielerwedstrijden werd het binnenplein (pelouse) ook gebruikt om te
voetballen. Na de oorlog lag de piste er belabberd bij en was
restauratie noodzakelijk.
Het voetbal verhuisde naar de Dr. Van de Perrestraat en er werd
alleen nog gekoerst. De tweede wereldoorlog strooide wederom roet
in het sportieve eten. Onder impuls van Jef Vekemans werd de baan
terug hersteld en in gebruik genomen, met zelfs een criterium met
Ronde van Frankrijk renners waaronder Rik Van Steenbergen.
Eind jaren 50 ging het fel achteruit met de koersen waardoor in het
begin van de jaren 60 de velodroom werd afgebroken en plaats ruimde
voor een moderne woonwijk.
Op dit ogenblik (na vele jaren) is het een fraai plein geworden
waar de kinderen naar hartenlust kunnen ravotten.

English: Hasty races through the bends at “the Bend”
(“De Bocht” in Holven)
Sunday 2nd May 1909 was the start of hasty races through the bends,
not by car, but by bike. That day saw the official inauguration of
the Geel Velodrome (track cycling arena). There were lots of such
velodromes in Belgium at that time, but in 1908, Geel began
construction of the largest open-air cycling track in the land. The
opening games included a speed contest, a drop-out race, a
three-series contest , een fond race and a motorcycle race with the
Belgian champion of the day Jan Olieslagers.
This velodrome, called ‘De Heidebloem’ (‘the
Heathbell’), had its high days before the 1st World War. The
inner yard (pelouse) was also used for footballmatches. After the
war, the track lay in ruins and needed renovation.
Football moved to another location (Dr. Van de Perrestraat) and
cycling became the sole activity. The 2nd World War was yet again a
spoilsport. Under the impulse of Jef Vekemans the track was
renovated a second time and the races included stars of the Tour de
France such as Rik Van Steenbergen.
In the late 50s, cycling went into decline. In the early 60s, the
velodrome was demolished and it made room for a modern residential
area.
At this moment, after so many years, the area has become a village
green, where children can romp at will.
