I have chosen to set this cache around the beautiful area of
Fawley. We often drive along the A338 and thought that a cache here
would show the countryside off nicely.
Fawley is a small village on the Berkshire-Oxfordshire border
between Hungerford and Wantage.
Fawley or Great Fawley was the setting for Jude the Obscure, the
novel by Thomas Hardy although it was named Marygreen in the book.
Fawley, however, was Jude’s surname. The story was set in the
village as it was the home of Thomas Hardy’s Grandmother. The
cottage where she once lived is now called Jude Cottage.
A little further south from (Great) Fawley is South Fawley. Here
you can find a manor house built to resemble a castle. It was built
in 1614. To the south of South Fawley is the uninhabited village of
Whatcombe.
The co-ordinates at the top of the page are for stage 1. Parking
can be found here as well. You will need to wander over and look at
the Fawley Monument. Here you will need to gain some information,
do a little maths and find the co-ordinates for the cache.
What year was Philip Wroughton born? Let the answer be
ABCD
How old was he when he died? Let the answer be EF
The cache can be found at:
N 51. (A+E) A . D F (D-E)
W 001. E (D-A). D B D
There is parking at the cache location. Both stages can be
accessed by pushchairs and wheel chairs, though help will be
required at the cache site as the grass is fairly long. The
co-ordinates have been taken 3 times on separate occasions using a
Garmin.
