Cache placed with approval of Green Ridge State Forest Manager
Green Ridge State Forest is one of Maryland's largest state forests and consists of approximately 46,000 acres of pine, oak, and hickory forests. Recreational opportunities include camping, hiking, backpacking, mountain biking, public shooting range, hunting, fishing, and paddling. The nearby C & O Canal (operated by the National Park Service) offers biking, hiking, and horseback riding opportunities. The state of Maryland obtained the first portions of GRSF in 1931, and has continued to manage the forest for many uses.

William Carroll chartered the Town Hill Mining, Manufacturing and Timber Company in 1832. This site was thought to house the largest stationary steam sawmill in Allegany County at the time. Livestock pulled logs from the mountain down to the mill, and finished lumber was hauled through a road known as Devil’s Alley to the Potomac River to be taken to market. The business experienced financial difficulties due to transportation inefficiencies in getting logs to the mill and finished lumber to the river to be sent to market. Much of the timber on steep terrain was too difficult to access to be able to make a profit. The mill was also limited by the distance a steer or horse could drag a log. Large centralized mills like Carroll’s eventually succumbed to the more economical portable steam sawmill. The sawmill of the Town Hill Mining, Manufacturing and Timber Company went out of business after only 10 years.
