Calm river: Turku Alphabet - C Mystery Cache

   Vähäjoen laakso - Räntämäen ja Raunistulan luontoaarre  

Vähäjoki

Vähäjoki on 27 kilometriä pitkä joki Turussa. Vähäjoen ympäristön pellot ja avoimet maisema-alueet ovat arvokasta kulttuurimaisemaa ja tästä syystä Vähäjoki onkin sekä Räntämäen että Raunistulan luontoaarre. Joki saa alkunsa Paattisilta (yläjuoksulla joki tunnetaan myös Paattistenjokena) ja laskee Aurajokeen (GC270BT) Maarian kirkon luona. Vähäjoen vesi on pääosin samanlaatuista kuin Aurajoenkin, viime vuosina vedenlaatu on ollut tyydyttävää tai välttävää.

Aikoinaan Vähäjoki oli suosittu uimapaikka ja joessa olikin monessa kohtaa uimamahdollisuus. Veden syvyys vaihteli paljonkin, matalimmalla uimapaikalla (Alalammi) veden syvyys oli metrin molemmin puolin mutta syvimmällä paikalla (Malmilammi) oli jopa hyppylava jonka paikalliset nuoret itse rakensivat paikalle. Uiminen kuitenkin loppui perunajauhotehtaan (sijainti kartalla) alkuvuosina kun tehdas alkoi laskemaan päästöjään jokeen.

Myös Amalieborgin oluttehdas / viinanpolttimo ja Hellaksen makeistehdas (joita esittelee kätkö Vanha karkkitehdas (GC10BAQ)) ovat laskeneet jätevesiään Piipanojan kautta Vähäjokeen, tosin vedet ovat ensin suodattuneet Aalloppi-lammessa (sijainti kartalla). Viime aikoina Vähäjoki on ollut uutisissa lähinnä suurten jättiputki-esiintymien takia joita näkee parhaiten käymällä TJAIn VARO! Jättiputki ( ALERT! Heracleum sp) (GC22Q78)-kätköllä. Tästä syystä pieni alue Vähäjoen rannoista (juuri tuon edellä mainitun kätkön läheisyydessä) on nyt parin vuoden ajan peitettynä mustalla pressulla ja torjunnan olisi tarkoitus loppua vuonna 2011.

Mysteerin ratkaiseminen

• Ensin sinun pitää hakea tämän sarjan ensimmäinen kätkö Ajurinkatu: Turku Alphabet - A (GC2E17C). Sen kätkön lokikirjasta löytyy todennäköisesti ympyröitynä numero jonka tarvitset sarjan seuraavan kätkön ratkaisuun.
• Saatuasi numeron sinun pitää hakea sarjan seuraava kätkö joka on Bore: Turku Alphabet - B (GC2FVXT) (tämän hakemiseen tarvitset Ajurinkadulta saamasi numeron, laskukaava löytyy Boren kuvauksesta). Löydettyäsi Boren purkin löydät myös sen lokikirjasta numeron jota tarvitset tämän Calm river-kätkön löytämiseen.
• Tämän Calm river-kätkön löydät sitten koordinaateista (Z on luku jonka sait Borelta):
  N 60° 28.XXX E 022° 17.YYY
  jossa XXX = Z*40+29 ja YYY = Z*10+31

Kätköpaikka

Kätköpaikkaa kannattaa lähestyä etelästä, muistathan kuitenkin noudattaa liikennemerkkejä. Sieltä löydät myös sopivan parkkipaikan fillarille / mopolle / autolle. Varsinkin kauniilla aurinkoisella kelillä paikka voi olla hyvinkin kuvauksellinen ja kätkön omistaja antaakin mielellään luvan laittaa kuvia loggauksiin.

   The valley of Vähäjoki - The nature treasure of Räntämäki and Raunistula  

The place

Vähäjoki (could be translated for example as "Less river" or "Tiny river") is a river in Turku. Surrounding fields and open scenery around are part of valuable Finnish cultural landscape, which is the reason why Vähäjoki has been selected to be the natural treasure of Räntämäki and Raunistula (which are city quarters of Turku). The length of Vähäjoki is 27 kilometers and it starts at Paattinen. The quality of water is mainly the same as in Aurajoki (GC270BT), on the last few years it has been mostly satisfying.

Vähäjoki used to be a popular place for swimming and there were many swimming places on the riverbanks. The depth of water varied a lot, on the lowest place (Alalammi) the depth was less than a meter but on the deepest area (Malmilammi) there were even jumping board which was build by the local youngsters. The swimming on the Vähäjoki ended when potato flour factory (on the map) started in Kärsämäki and the factory started to release it's sewage to Vähäjoki.

Also the beer and booze factory of Amalieborg and the candy factory of Hellas (introduced by the cache Vanha karkkitehdas (GC10BAQ)) has been releasing their sewages to Vähäjoki via Piipanoja, although water has been filtering in little pond called Aalloppi (location on map) first. On the last few years Vähäjoki has been seen on the news mainly because there's a lot of "Heracleum sp"-called poisonous plant growing on the banks of Vähäjoki. The best way to get known with those plants is to visit at VARO! Jättiputki ( ALERT! Heracleum sp) (GC22Q78)-cache by TJAI. Those plants are the reason why some parts of shores of Vähäjoki has been covered with black blankets. The blankets should kill the plants under them, this project should take two years and should end at 2011.

Solving the mystery part

• First you have to go and search the first cache in this series which is Ajurinkatu: Turku Alphabet - A (GC2E17C). From that cache you should find a number (probably rounded) which you will need to find the next cache.
• After that you need to find a second cache which is Bore: Turku Alphabet - B (GC2FVXT). That's a mystery and you'll need a number from the first cache to solve it. Let's say that number is X. Correct northern N-coordinate is already given on the bogus coordinates of Bore, so you don't have to change it. E-coordinate can be solved as follows: Take the E-coordinate from the bogus-coordinates of Bore and add the result of following count to the decimals:
  X * "length of the ship as whole number" / 500
  From the logbook of Bore you'll get a new number which you will need to find this Calm River-cache. That number is Z.
• Now when you have the required number you'll find this Calm river-cache from:
  N 60° 28.XXX E 022° 17.YYY
  where XXX = Z*40+29 and YYY = Z*10+31

The cache

The cache itself should be approached from the south, but please remember to obey the traffic signs. You can also find a suitable parking place for your bike / moped / car from there. If you take a good photo from the place feel free to attach it to your log.
