The South Umpqua Falls are
incredible! They cascade down the smooth rocks into a large pool.
This is a resting place for
Chinook salmon as
they are
migrating up the river to spawn. There is a fish
ladder to make the journey easier for them. The
picnic area at the falls is also very special. There are several
sites and a very large concrete area for a group too. I understand
this is a favorite swimming hole in the summer
too!
This cache is on the trail to the bottom of
the falls. It can be accessed off the paved road or from the
parking area for the falls. You are looking for a small peanut
butter container with some trade items and a log book. Please be
sure to rehide well because there are a lot of muggles in the area.
Elevation is 1662'.
Side Note: Across the road from the picnic
area is a very nice Forest Service campground too. It has 20 sites
and looks well maintained. There were hunters in about 5 campsites
when we were there.
