Geocache Description:

In 1985 the Red Mountain Lookout cupola was moved from the top of Red Mountain in the Cow Creek area to this spot near the Tiller Ranger Station. It is now a historical landmark that is easily accessible for most everyone (not wheel chair accessible). A short trail leads to the lookout perched on a hill above the convergence of South Umpqua River and Elk Creek.

This cupola was originally built in 1928 and due to the excellent construction it handled the move very well. According to the literature, there are less than 10 cupola style lookouts remaining in Oregon. We have been to at least two others - Dutchman Peak and Herschberger.

This cache is a small plastic pail with some trade items and a log book. As you walk around the lookout, peering in the windows, pay special attention to the corner closest to the stairs leading to the only door.

This fire lookout does not qualify for the Oregon Fire Lookout Challenge because it is not in its original location. If you need another qualifier in this section visit "Original Red Mountain Lookout".
