A structure that we commonly take for granted here in the west, the cattle guard is a unique device that keeps the cattle on their side of the fence while allowing easy vehicle access from either direction. The alternative would be to stop, get out and open the gate, get back in and drive through, stop and close the gate, get back in and proceed. You won't see these in the east or anywhere that there is not open range.
