Geocache Description:

Be vigilant while traveling this heavily traffic'd 2-lane and scenic highway.

While traveling in the area, you may be itching for some shooting practice. Well, you may be in luck. When you're on-site, you'll notice that shooting from the roadway is prohibited. What about from the parking area so conveniently provided?

CONGRATULATIONS to Li1gray on the FTF!

If you have traveled along the Seward Highway Cache Tour placed by cohofive, then you are aware of the beautiful vistas along that route and the amount of detail and pictures that went into each of their quintessential cache pages.

The cohofive series prompted my desire to create a similar series for another Alaskan highway: the Sterling Highway. This series, however, is more like Clif Notes, a quick tour per se, with the cacher needing to explore the area to find depth of meaning and impressions.

The Sterling Highway (Alaska Highway 1) begins at the Tern Lake exit of the Seward Highway. It winds along Kenai Lake to Cooper Landing, continues along the Kenai River, through the Kenai Wildlife Refuge, and on through Sterling to Soldotna. At Soldotna, the highway takes a southerly turn and follows Cook Inlet past Clam Gulch, the Russian Orthodox church at Ninilchik, the sometimes erupting volcanic neighbors of Redoubt and Iliamna, past the most westerly US road at Anchor Point, and culminates its journey in the halibut capitol of the world - Homer.

While there are beautiful vistas and beach accesses along the Sterling Highway, one thing that became apparent while traveling this most favorite route of mine was that there are few turnouts, that many are within the Kenai National Wildlife Refuge, and that much of the land along the highway corridor is privately held. If you are blessed with a sunny, clear day, I bet you'll fall in love with this Highway, much as I have. If so, you may just find yourself returning no matter the season or the weather. Be forewarned!
