The cache is located along the eastern side of the Sutter bypass slough. It is about a four-tenths-mile walk from the parking site (see parking coordinates below). The vertically challenged will need a boost, or the use of an extraction device (arm extender). Be advised that there is poison oak at the site.
The upland sandpiper (aka upland plover) is a large shorebird, closely related to the curlews. It has long yellow legs, with the head and neck being light with brown streaks. The back and upper wings are a darker mottled brown, and the belly is white. The breeding area is open grasslands and fields across central North America and Alaska. It is not associated with water like other sandpipers. Its diet includes grasshoppers, crickets, beetles, moths, ants, flies, centipedes, spiders, snails, earthworms, and some grasses and seeds. It is a long distance migrant, who winters in South America.
