The cache is located along the eastern side of the Sutter bypass slough. It is about two-thirds of a mile from the parking site (see parking coordinates below). If you walk quietly along the sandy track on the west side of the levee, near the water, you may see some wild life. We especially enjoyed seeing turtles sunning themselves on logs, and sizable carp feeding in the shallows. I had to hold Abbie's leash firmly, as several jackrabbits fled the scene.
It was one of the largest woodpeckers in the world, at roughly 20 inches in length and 30 inches in wingspan. This colorful bird...sometimes referred to as "King of the Woodpeckers" or "Elvis in Feathers"...was last seen in Louisiana several years ago. Sadly, this awesome bird has become extinct.
