Before the influenza epidemic which struck around here in the 1840's, Providence Church was a prosperous little country church. This is where the story begins.
After losing about six of the congregation's children in less than a month to the sickness, strange things began occurring at the church. Each Sunday morning the minister would find tiny foot prints in the dust on the pews and tiny hand prints all over the window panes. Each Monday the church would be cleaned and dusted by the ladies of the church but the following Sunday the tiny prints would return. After a month or so other strange things began to occur. Horses would act up badly whenever they were at the church grounds as darkness fell. On several occasions horses panicked, broke their tethers and bolted off down the road. These unnatural occurrances had a dire effect on the members of the church and after a year the congregation disbanded and the church building fell into disrepair.
The story doesn't end here though. In the early 1960's teenagers rediscovered the secluded spot and began using it as a make out and party destination. It wasn't long before reports of strange noises coming from the woods began to circulate. These noises were often described as the sound of infants crying. Soon, night time visitors began noticing little hand prints all over the rear of their cars. Word of these mysterious happenings circulated among the teens and it wasn't long before the use of this cemetery as a nightime parking spot ended. Even to this day Providence Cemetery is not considered a good place to visit after dark.
