Geocache Description:

The Brandt's Cormorant (Phalacrocorax penicillatus) is a strictly marine bird. Its specific name, (penicillatus) is Latin for a painter's brush (pencil of hairs), in reference to white plumes on its neck and back during the early breeding season.

antThe common name honors the German naturalist Johann Friedrich von Brandt of the Academy of Sciences at St. Petersburg, who described the species from specimens collected on expeditions to the Pacific during the early 19th century.named for the 'painter’s brush' (pencillatus) of white hairs seen on its neck and back during breeding season.

The cormorant family of seabirds inhabits the Pacific coast of North America. During the breeding season, adults have a blue throat patch. This species nests on the ground, in trees or on rocky outcroppings...just like the one viewable at this cache site.

Notice the Island across the bay...the one near the lighthouse...the standing trees on the Island are dead, due to the cormorant nesting practices.

From this point you can view the habits of them nesting on sheer rock faces.
