Geocache Description:

This cache is placed at Camp Hero for the 100th Anniversary of Boy Scouts. It was placed here during a camporee weekend where 800 scouts from Suffolk County were in attendance for the weekend.

Camp Hero was established in 1942 and was named after Major General Andrew Hero, Jr. who was the Armys Chief of Coast Artillery between 1926-1930. It was initally chosen because it was considered a prime location for a possible invasion because of its remoteness and its location midway between two major American cities. To protect Camp Hero, the entire base was built to look like a typical New England fishing village. It was decommissioned in 1980, and now is owned by the New York State Department of Park. Since 2002, Camp Hero State Park is open to the public and is a popular surf fishing beach, and also offers hiking, a bridle path, biking and cross country skiing.
Vehicle entrance is $8.00. The cache is an ammo box. There is a disposable camera in the cache to take a picture. Please leave the camera in the cache.
