English:
Very important was once the iron ore mining in Schelderwald, which
is documented to the 12th can be traced back centuries. He must
have been, however, far greater than that to prove the documents
appear. In addition to iron and copper was mined to a limited
extent, silver.
The iron ore was mainly in deposits of ruddle. The Oberscheld
ruddle has a reddish brown color. Ruddle can have up to 70% iron
content, here it was about 40%. In the early Middle Ages the iron
in so called “Rennöfen” (shaft furnace) melted at
temperatures of 1,100 ° C from the stone. A racing furnace was
built of clay or stone. He was ventilated by a blower. The slag was
running (hence the name of the furnace) from a vent from the
furnace. In the later Middle Ages, it was then the iron works, with
their blast furnaces.
The Lahn-Dill area belongs geologically to the so-called
"Hessian Syncline, which has a complicated geological structure.
The Hessian Syncline is located in the east and southeast of the
Rhenish Massif and is geologically divided into the Dill basin, the
Lahn Syncline and the distinctive structure of the Hörr zone that
separates the pocket and the Lahn Dill basin. In the East, the
share of Giessen ceiling Lahn-Dill area. The result is the Syncline
by folding and thrust in the Palaeozoic, with it caused many
breakdowns due to uplift, fracture lines and dislocations.
Volcanism in the Tertiary Westerwald impressed with the emergence
of today's landscape.
Because of the geological history and the occurrence of numerous
fault zones, the Lahn-Dill area, an unusual diversity of ores and
mineral resources has to offer.
The mining and light railway club Schelderwald e. V. has the
restoration of the tunnel Ypsilanta a small monument to the mining
history in the Schelderwaldes.
This tunnel is from April to October every 1st Sunday of the
month, 14:00 to 17:00 clock be visited.
