GREAT PALACE MOSAICS MUSEUM
The Byzantine era Great Palace of Constantinople dates back to
the 4th Century A.C. The palace served as the administrative centre
of the city until the 13th century. It was raided by Crusaders in
the 14th century and although it was rebuilt, the maintenance costs
associated with it proved too high and it was largely left to ruin.
During the Ottoman Empire, parts of the Palace were demolished to
make way for new construction. Much of it now lies buried under the
buildings of Sultanahmet.
The mosaics themselves once covered up to 4000m² of the entire
floor area of an open courtyard. Only about 250m² remains. The
designs vary greatly, featuring a variety of scenes depicting
hunting, fables, mythical creatures, animals, humans and objects.
The origins of the Mosaics are disputed, but estimates range from
between the 5th – 6th centuries.
We placed a small cylindirical metallic box at the entrance of
the garden. Box is greater than a film canister but smaller than a
regular lock-lock box. It can house small objects like small TB's,
coins, etc. The box is hidden by dense ivy foliage..
The museum is closed on Mondays. Opening hours are : 9 am - 4.30
pm. Entrance fee is 8 turkish lira, although you do not need to pay
any fee for entering the garden where the box is hidden.
