Small tupperware cache up a trail on the Hydaburg Highway.
The One Duck Trail is another jewel in the Forest Service's impressive collection of beautiful, well-maintained trails. Constructed by the Youth Conservation Corps and newly graveled in 2010, this moderately steep trail leads to breathtaking vistas of the Harris River valley.
The trail rises 1100 feet in 1.25 miles, but the Forest Service has strategically placed benches at viewpoints for recuperation. Even if you only make it up a half mile, you'll be rewarded by a gorgeous view. As you climb higher, it only gets better.
Trail is gravel, with a couple of wooden bridges. Steps made of log framework filled with gravel make this a reasonable trail to take even in the rain. The official trail ends at a shelter open in the front.
In early gradeschool, I discovered the Narnia Chronicles book series, and was enchanted by the idea of jumping into a puddle and emerging in an alternate world. As an adult hiking in Alaska, the pools in the muskeg reminded me of this childhood story.
Starting from the Klawock-Hollis highway, drive to mile 19 (19 miles from Craig, 12 miles from Hollis) and take the Hydaburg Highway south. The trailhead is 2.5 miles from this intersection. Parking is across the road at a turnout.
Cache is a 5x5x2 inch lock-n-lock tupperware located at the end of the trail. Two local friends have graciously offered to maintain this cache.
