In 1793 C. Barrett got a charter from the Mass. Gen. Court to erect a canal system on the St. George River for transporting products down river & supplies for settlers up river. Gen Henry Knox acquired the canal interests in 1795 & operated the system until 1806. A survey for improvements was made in 1837. The Georges Canal Company re-opened the 28 mile waterway in 1847, but changes in trading & population soon spelled its doom. The last boat went down the canal in 1850.
The cache is an ammo can. The trail can be wet at times, well, because it's a canal.
