“Whole Lotta Love” is the first track off of Led Zeppelin’s second album, Led Zeppelin II, which was released in 1969. “Whole Lotta Love” was Led Zeppelin’s first US single and only single that ever made it into the Top 10. Stairway to Heaven was never released as a single. The song was never released as a single in 1969 in their native England as they felt that it would hurt album sales. In 1997, this became the only single Led Zeppelin ever released in the UK, 27 years after it was released in the US.
Robert Plant did the vocal in one take.
The song was used as the theme song to the BBC’s Top of the Pops show. The band never appeared on the program because manager Peter Grant discouraged TV appearances.
Rolling Stone magazine ranked the song #75 on its 500 Greatest Songs of All Time. VH1 ranked the song the third greatest hard rock song of all time
