Geocache Description:

(Tamarisk)

This cache is the tenth in a series of caches with the theme of “Trees.” Each of these caches is placed near a different species of tree common to the Grants, New Mexico area.

This cache is located along the famous Route 66. Parking is not an issue.

A naturalized shrub or small tree with slender, upright or spreading branches and narrow or rounded crown; resembling a juniper, though not an evergreen. Usually less than 20 feet tall and about four inches in diameter bearing very small scalelike leaves that drop off in the fall.

This tree grows in moist areas along streams, irrigation ditches, and reservoirs in alkaline to salty soil. Originally native to SE Europe and Asia, the tree was imported into North America and now grows widely from Nebraska westward to California up to elevations exceeding 6,500 feet. Originally imported as an ornamental, it is now considered a nuisance, because it sucks up water needed by native species such as Cottonwood and willow trees.

The cache is a small plastic container with a screw-on lid painted in camo colors. FTF gets a "Drummer Boy" quarter. Log book, pencil, bouncy ball, Halloween finger puppet and other small trade items.
