The Appalachian Mountains are in the eastern United States. They stretch through the northern parts of Mississippi, Alabama, Georgia and South Carolina, then on into Tennessee, North Carolina, Kentucky, Virginia, West Virgina, Ohio, Maryland, Pennsylvania, and then into the southern part of New York.
The cultural region of Appalacia typically refers to the central and southern portions. This region has been a source of myths and distortions about the isolation, temperment and the behavior of the inhabitants of the area for years. Some of the stories are about moonshining, clan feuding and how uneducated and prone to impulsive violence the people are. Studies have shown that these things aren’t true, but the media have continued to perpetuate the stereotypes of the people of Appalacia as being culturally backward.
The name comes from a Native American village in the Tallahassee, Florida area called the Apalchen. It was later altered by the Spanish to Apalachee.
