Announcing the first-ever Geo-Cookie Exchange! At least it’s the first one we’ve ever heard about.

Because holidays and cookies go together like “ammo” and “can,” we thought a cookie exchange might be a fun way to get together and share a few holiday treats. According to a quick Google search, the first record of a cookie exchange dates from 1963:

"A popular once-a-year party is the Christmas cooky* swap party. Friends and neighbors gather, each bringing one dozen of her holiday specialty for each woman at the party. Cookies are set out to sample and admire and coffee is served. Afterward each one takes home a wonderful variety of festive cookies."--Betty Crocker's “Cooky* Book,” 1963 edition

*=yep, that’s how Betty spelled it.

DATE: Saturday, December 18, 2010
TIME: 2:00 P.M. to 3:45 P.M.
LOCATION: Altisima Park; Rancho Santa Margarita, CA

How exactly does the cookie exchange work? It's pretty simple. Just bake three (3) dozen cookies and bring ‘em to the event! Also, please e-mail your recipe by December 11, 2010 to the event hosts. A few tips:

  • Please bring three (3) dozen of the same type. That way, people won’t feel like they missed something. (“Hey, did you try the red-and-green lemon fruitcake drops from cacher X?" "Uh no, I thought she made the cinnamon sugar-dusted oatmeal stars!“)
  • If you feel uncomfortable sharing a particular cookie recipe with others, go with a recipe you don’t mind making public. One of the best parts of a cookie exchange is seeing what went into each creation, and re-creating them later.
  • The exchange takes place between chefs. Family members are VERY welcome, but they’ll need to steal cookies from Mom’s take-home collection.
  • Please, no store-bought or prepared dough cookies. We’re looking for original work here. Put simply, you gotta bake ‘em to take ‘em. ;-)
  • Why only three (3) dozen? Because we don’t want people to stress out! If we followed Betty Crocker’s lead (one dozen per attendee) and 24 cachers showed up, you’d need to bake a whopping 288 cookies! Better to go with a small number and use any extra time to go caching or buy presents for JJG10101.
