The Dam of Girard Lower Lake, completed in 1918, was an important resource to the quickly developing steel city of Girard, Ohio.
Located in the Squaw Creek area of Trumbull County, Ohio, Girard Lower Lake had been used for drinking water, recreation purposes & water source for the steel industries nearby.
Proceeding 2004 local area flooding, The Ohio Dept. of Natural Resources (ODNR) called for the city to undergo an Emergency Action Plan (EAP) in order to either repair or breach the deteriorating dam. The city and local Senators attempted to pass a bill approximately a year later to raise funds for a repair project but failed to follow through. In result, the lower sector of Girard Lake underwent drainage.
By 2007, funds were still not resourced so the EAP was to follow the plan to breach the dam completely. July 2008, 13 panels were cut into the front surface of the dam putting Girard Lower Lake at it's final resting place.
Empty and sitting desolate as a lonely desert bed, I still have fond memories of this place. The lake at that time was large and intimidating but still beautiful on a moonlit night. It is, in a way, depressing to see the abandoned lake bed and structures, even the boat that sits at the entrance but it is nice to return to great memories once spent at this location.

This is a small 1/2 quart container hidden at the former site of the Girard Lower Lake. The terrain differs from season to season here. In the summer you may encounter several jagger bushes, some poisonous plant and high grasses, other seasons may make travel a bit muddy, but over all it should not take more than 20 minutes to locate and retrieve.
