In order to visit this place you have to take the "Ruta de las
Cascadas" way, that starts in Baños, and continues passing near the
towns of Ulba, Rio Blanco, and Rio Verde. You have also to cross
five or six tunnels until you find a place called "Machay" (please
see the information signs).
There is a touristic business in the right side of the road
where you will find something to eat. If you just want to visit the
waterfalls, it is better if you park next to a small covered soccer
court that lies on the left side of the road (see PARKING
waypoint).
The only way you can reach the waterfalls is using your own
feet. No cars or bicycles are suitable. There is a clearly defined
path that starts just crossing the bridge which is located 100
meters east from the soccer court. It takes about 45-55 minutes to
get from your current position to the place where the cache is
hidden.
You have to ascend until the third waterfall (San Agustín) using
the defined pathway. Then take a small detour (WA1) until you reach
the river. Be careful as this last part of the trail is not as easy
as the main pathway.
During the trip you are likeky to see lots of butterflies, and
other colorful insects. Take a look at the "Saladero de Mariposas".
Plants, orchids, and fungus are everywhere. If you are lucky you
will also watch some species of native birds. Please be respectful
with the environment. I'm sure your children and grandchildren will
be grateful when they see this place intact.
Once you are near the cache please take some time and admire the
beauty of the surroundings (photos soon), go for a dip, or rest for
a while. Moreover, I encourage you to practice CITO.
Time for finding the cache?. Of course, you are not likely to
find lots of muggles here ;). I'm sure the cache is not difficult
to find. Just see the clue and you will get it! Don't forget to
rehide the cache well to prevent muggling. Also, notify me when the
logbook is full.
Before your adventure ends, you are encouraged to visit the
other waterfalls that exists along the trail. However, I do not
recommend staying here after dusk as you are not likely to find
suitable places for camping.
Important note: The place and the trail are generally
safe. However, be smart and take at least the basic precautions:
Notify someone about where you are going to be, don't go alone,
bring water and food, use sunscreen and insect repellent, etc.
Another note: a pair of waterproof boots are strongly
recommended as you might have to cross mud or several small
streams. A walking stick is helpful.
Yet another note: GPS signal is not as good as you might
think at the geocache location. Sumajman took its own coordinates
while we were here last time: S 01.23.337 W 078.16.818. Please
register in your logs which pair of coordinates is best for you in
order to update the location.
