The town of Hickory Run had its heyday in the mid-1800s. Lumbermen settled here to take advantage of the vast forests in the area. Mills were constructed within the present-day park along Mud Run, Hickory Run, Hawk Run, and Sand Spring Run. The timber was used to build the Lehigh Canal along the nearby Lehigh River, and later the railroad adjacent to the river and the canal. The bark of White Pine and Eastern Hemlock was sent several miles north to Lehigh Tannery, which in the 1860’s was the site of the second largest tannery in the United States.
A flood in 1849, and others later on, as well as a great fire in 1875 caused the population of this small town to dwindle.
Most of the people buried in this cemetery lived during this era.
