Geocache Description:

ENGLISH:

Arne Rettedal was a prominent and successful local politician who from 1981 to 1986 was the municipal and county minister in Kåre Willoch's government. He played an important role in the establishment of Stavanger as oil capital, and as minister, he was widely known for his solution to unemployment, with work on Social Security, as word of mouth gave rise to new order "rettedøler". His influence on Norwegian oil is less known outside of Stavanger.

Rettedal was municipal and county minister for the Conservative Party in Stavanger for almost 30 years. For 14 years he was mayor, initially in Madla 1964, and after the merger of the municipalities, in Stavanger, 1965-67 and 1972-81. He was, in other words, the mayor of Stavanger when the Norwegian oil industry started in 1966. It was Rettedal whom foreign oil companies contacted to learn about the Norwegian conditions and the business oppertunities they could provide. He served as a local politician, a significant effort to get the state to choose Stavanger as headquarters for his new oil company - later known as Statoil - and then the Norwegian Petroleum Directorate 1973, two main pillars of the new oil town.
