The Beveridge Steps (Auckland) Traditional Cache

This cache has been archived.

Nedd: Checked the cache today, to find it lying fully exposed and the log sheet soaked (in a separate container inside the sistema to try to keep it dry). It seems some cachers can't be bothered to (a) place caches back in the original position and (b) ensure the cache is properly closed after signing. After multiple restorations to the cache, I can't be bothered any more.

Geocache Description:

If you walk or cycle along Exhibition Drive, at 400m from Shaw Rd or 1.6km from the waterworks at the junction of Woodlands Park Rd and the Scenic Drive, you'll come across an incongruous set of concrete steps leading up into the bush and going nowhere. A signboard gives a brief history of the spot.

These steps once led to the house of Joe Beveridge and his family - Joe worked on the water pipeline along Exhibition Drive. Today practically nothing remains of the house, and bush has largely reclaimed the land although there are still clear spaces which hint at a home and garden.

For cyclists, there are good places to hide a bike in the bush just east of the steps, while you explore the site. Exhibition Drive is a great place to walk or cycle in a lovely bush setting, away from traffic - and it's flat!
