Geocache Description:

Jan. 9, 2017 - I recently adopted this cache and hiked up today to clean it out and correct the coordinates based on the comments. I found the cache within 40 feet or so. For the new coords, I averaged them over 10 minutes and I have adjusted them to reflect what I found. I have also corrected the hint to be more pertinent. Also, the "tree tunnel" referred to below isn't obvious in the winter.

Reaching the rank of Eagle Scout in the Boy Scouts of America requires years of dedication and hard work. In addition to 21 required merit badges, each Scout must complete a project that — on average — requires 167 service hours. In 2008 alone, that translated to $16 million in service (based on the national volunteer hour value of $19.51).

In August 2009 two eagle scout candidates extended a trail through the arboretum on the WWU campus. The boys worked in conjunction with the Bellingham Parks department and REI to provide equipment and organize the volunteers. The new trail can be accessed from the main road just before the road passes under the "tree tunnel." I suggest you park at the parking area on the right side of the road right after you enter the gate and walk uphill until you reach the "tree tunnel". Follow the trail downhill (right if you are going up the road) and then take the first trail to the left. At this point you are on the work of the Eagle Scouts and the cache is approximately 1/10 of a mile away. The boys had to clear the path of vegetation and level the path.

This cache is part of a nationwide geocaching series called "Cache to Eagle" that showcases these special contributions. In Whatcom County there are 12 caches that are part of this series.
