Belfagor l'Arcidiavolo
Belfagor l'Arcidiavolo è una novella attribuita a Niccolò Machiavelli, scritta tra il 1518 e il 1527 che ha come protagonista il diavolo Belfagor (Belfagor era una divinità caldea trasformata in demonio dalla tradizione cristiana) che viene inviato sulla terra da Plutone, re degli Inferi, per verificare se è vero che la vita coniugale sia peggiore dell'Inferno. Belfagor, diventato uomo, va a vivere a Firenze e si sposa, finendo vittima di una donna che lo costringe a contrarre un debito dopo l'altro. Il povero diavolo è costretto allora a fuggire, inseguito dai creditori. Si rifugia nell'abitato di Peretola, dove viene salvato da un contadino, Gianmatteo del Brica, al quale per ricompensarlo, promette di farlo diventare ricco come esorcista di donne indemoniate. Belfagor infatti prima penetra nel corpo di alcune donne e poi, quando il contadino glielo chiede, ne esce. Arricchitosi a sufficienza, Belfagor non si dichiara più disposto ad aiutarlo ulteriormente; quando dunque Gianmatteo viene contattato dal Re di Francia per liberare dal demonio sua figlia, egli si rifiuta di svolgere il suo compito. Gianmatteo, rischiando di essere condannato a morte, organizza una beffa ai danni di Belfagor, facendogli credere che stia per giungere la moglie: il diavolo allora si spaventa a tal punto che lascia la fanciulla dalle sue grinfie e ritorna per sempre nell'Inferno. Belfagor the Arch-fiend
Belfagor the Arch-fiend is a novel attributed to Niccolò Machiavelli, written between 1518 and 1527 having as protagonist the devil Belafagor (Belfagor was a Caldean god transformed into a demon by the christian tradition) sent on the earth by Pluto, king of hell, to verify if it is true that the married life is worse than the hell. Belafgor is transformed into a man, goes living in Florence and get married, becoming the victim of a woman who forces him to run into debts more and more. He escapes and finds shelter in the house of Gianmatteo del Brica, a peasant. To reward him, he promises to make him rich as an exorcist of possessed women. Belfagor first goes into the women's body and after, as Gianmatteo asks him, goes out. Becoming rich enough, Belfagor decides to stop the play, so when the King of France asks to Gianmatteo to free his daughter from the devil, he refuses risking a penalty to death, so he organizes a joke to Belfagor, he convinces the devil that his wife is coming: the devis is so frightened that he lefts the girl from his possession and goes back to hell forever.
