- aus Bentheimer Sandstein erbaut -
Kleiner Multi - Erthcache mit zwei Stationen.
Windmühlen prägen seit vielen Jahrhunderten das Gesicht der norddeutschen Landschaft. Sie spielen zwar im Wirtschaftsleben unserer Region schon lange keine Bedeutung mehr, jedoch sind sie in den letzten Jahren wieder in das Interesse der Öffentlichkeit geraten, verraten sie doch dem Interessierten Wissenswertes über die Geschichte unserer Vorfahren, über handwerkliches Geschick und prägen nicht zuletzt das heutige Landschafts- und Ortsbild. Auch die Gildehauser Ostmühle hat eine lange und wechselvolle Geschichte, die sie mehr als einmal dem Abriss nahe brachte. Das Engagement Einzelner hat sie bis heute allerdings vor diesem Schicksal bewahrt. Erbaut wurde die Ostmühle in den Jahren 1749 / 50 aus Bentheimer Sandstein.

Bentheimer Sandstein, gelegentlich auch " Bentheimer Gold "
So wird der Sandstein landläufig genannt und das hat seinen guten Grund: Der Bentheimer und Gildehauser Sandstein wird seid über 800 Jahren in den Sandsteinkuhlen gebrochen. Er war im 17. und 18. Jahrhundert wohl die wichtigste Einnahmequelle für die Bentheimer Grafen und damit so wertvoll wie Gold. Viele Bauwerke wurden aus Bentheimer Sandstein errichtet, so das Königliche Palais in Amsterdam, die Waage in Bremen oder beispielsweise das Emder Rathaus. Überall in der Burgstadt und den Ortsteilen ist der Sandstein präsent: in den Stiegen, Gassen und Häusern, als Sandsteinmauern, Steinmetzarbeiten oder Sandsteinkunst.

Wer noch mehr über das Betheimer "Gold" erfahren möchte, sollte das Geologisches Freilichtmuseum Gildehaus besuchen. ( ca 1km nördlich der Ostmühle ) Das Geologische Freilichtmuseum befindet sich in Gildehaus, ganz in der Nähe des einzigen noch in Betrieb befindlichen Steinbruchs der Grafschaft Bentheim. Entlang eines Rundweges von 200 m können Sie über 50 Exponate und 16 verschiedene Gesteinsarten besichtigen. Natursteine aus aller Welt - vom 30.000 Jahre jungen Travertin bis hin zum 1,4 Milliarden Jahre alten indischen Granit - führen Sie auf eine Zeitreise besonderer Art. Hier lässt sich Naturgeschichte unter freiem Himmel hautnah erleben.
Das Museum ist Offen zugänglich.

The east mill was built in the years 1749/50 from Bentheimer sandstone.

Thus the sandstone is landläufig called and that has its good reason: The Bentheimer and Gildehauser sandstone are broken over 800 years in the Sandsteinkuhlen. It was in 17. and 18. Century probably the most important source of income for the Bentheimer count and thus as valuable as gold. Many buildings were established from Bentheimer sandstone, so the royal palace in Amsterdam, the balance in Bremen or for example the Emder city hall. Everywhere in the castle city and the local parts the sandstone is present: in the staircases, lanes and houses, as sandstone walls, stone mason works or sandstone art.

Who still more over the Betheimer " Gold" experienced, should that would like to visit geological open air museum guild house. (approx. 1km north the east mill) The geological open air museum is in guild house, close by the only one still in enterprise quarry present of the county Bentheim. Along a round way of 200 m you can over 50 exhibits and 16 different kinds of rock visit. Natural stones from all over the world - of the 30,000 years young Travertin up to 1.4 billion the year old Indian granite - lead on a time journey of special art. Here natural history can be experienced in the open air very closely.
