Geocache Description:

A fairly quick multi in the village of Kilpeck, the cache is hidden on a nearby footpath. Although there is no need to enter the castle grounds for any clues they are worth a look with good views of the Black Mountains. Please tuck cache away carefully after finding and bring your own pen, thanks.

Kilpeck was once a prosperous settlement in medieval times and a castle stood close to the church. The Black Death swept through the area in 1349 though and the castle became neglected by absentee landlords. Apart from some crumbling walls of the keep, only the defensive ditches are still visible today. The church of St Mary and St David dates from 1140 and is adorned with Romanesque carvings considered by some to be the the finest in England. The roofline is decorated with 85 corbels. The origins of the carvings and corbels are unclear but it is remarkable that they have remained in their original positions and so intact.
