History Lesson #2
GRISWOLD CEMETERY
Joshua J. Griswold was a prominent landowner and owner of a tavern
in the Town of Moreau. He also held many different positions for
the town, such as Supervisor and Town Clerk.
Griswold donated the 2.2 acres of land for this cemetery and placed
a deed restriction on the land so that it could never be sold. The
residents of the Fortsville area have been using this burial ground
since the the first known burial in 1816 and are still using it
today. Although, the cemetery is considered abandoned by New York
State law, the Town of Moreau took over the maintenance in the
spring of 1937 because it was in poor condition. There are also two
other cemeteries that the town maintains.
There is local lore that since Mr Griswold had donated the land,
Fortsville residents are allowed to be buried here, for FREE. After
extensive research, no documentation was found to back this
claim.
As always PLEASE be respectful and DO NOT disturb a
thing. Oh yes, bring your own pen and tweezers might help.
Happy Caching!
