Geocache Description:

Our family thought it would be great to explore the Newman Lake area. We each chose different areas to place a cache and give some history on the nearby area (the cache may not be located exactly as the history states but is close to the original location). Please enjoy the series: remember to bring a writing utensil, there is $1 for FTF along with some geo swag, and as always feel free to CITO.

NEWMAN LAKE HISTORY TOUR 40 - HONEYMOON BAY

A rancher named G.L. O'Neil, from the north end of the lake bought the location now called Honeymoon Bay for a down payment of $45. He sold it to R. Hathaway, who developed and ran the spot, with its dance hall, restaurant, store and cottages for some 15 years. It was then sold it E. Letzring who operated it in the 1950's.

In the summertime, a jitney "bus" provided transportation for weekend campers from Spokane to Honeymoon This jitney was a narrow vehicle, some 20 feet long with seats down the middle. Many times there were more passengers than seats and men and boys would stand on the running boards. They carried extra spare tires for emergencies.

Captain Fletcher operated the Gypsy which was moored at Honeymoon Bay where a special floating dock was shaped so the Gypsy could enter bow first, and passengers paying $.025, could step onto the floats on each side of the boat. The Gypsy carried passengers, mail and supplies to homes and other small resorts on the shores of Newman Lake.

* had to move the orginal Honeymoon Bay Cache & this is the replacement cache*
