Triangulation

Over the past few years I have fallen in love with Geocaching. I have made numerous friends and gone to wonderful places. I have gone caching alone, with family, with other cachers, at night, during the day, all day, in the snow, in the rain, in the hot, and in the cold. I have been to low, high, wet, dry, rural, and urban places. I have seen beautiful sunrises, sunsets, overlooks, waterfalls, and rock formations. I have used caving, boating, hiking, and climbing gear. But after all these experiences I still feel a void. Could it be filled with that 1 challenge that needs completed or is it that last puzzle to be solved? The long hike that cries for attention or the cliff that needs scaled? I’m sure you know exactly what I’m speaking of.

I have from time to time sat and pondered my caching accomplishments trying to pick that 1 cache that best sums up my experience. Every time I come to one very real conclusion, I can’t! The list keeps evolving and new doors continue to open. Just when I think I know, another cache comes along to pull me in.

While there will always be those few caches that stand out to me they all have significance. That MKH that is 5 feet from the car and takes 10 seconds to locate, the nano that takes 30 seconds to find and 6 minutes to sign and return. The stump 8 feet from the trail in the local park. The State Game Lands stroll that you can do blindfolded. They all factor into the experience of Geocaching.

However, I must admit that there are a couple that stand out. Not to long ago a couple guys and I went to Mainville off route 339. There is a cache there, GC16PVC “The Backbone”, that was really fun. The hike was very steep but the sense of accomplishment was great. From the cache you could look out over the edge and see for miles and miles. The slope was south east and very steep, 51.561882°, but you felt very safe and secure. The sight of the light fluffy clouds on the horizon will stick in my mind forever.

On another trip with family, 39.036215 miles away to the east south east is another one of my favorites, GC1HCHJ “MORE ROCKS”. The location is the beautiful Lehigh Valley close to the town of Bowmanstown just off route 248 close to the northeast extension of the PA Turnpike. The cache was located a short walk from parking but the trail was more like a staircase. Once on the top the view of the Turnpike and all the traffic below was wonderful. Everything was so close but so far away. The drop off was a very impressive 86.978665° down to the south west. While there we ate snacks and bonded with the sun in our faces. The images of my children will be forever etched in my mind from that day.

While there are many many caches that have left an impression on me these two stand out. I hope you take the time to not only go for this cache but the others as well. Happy caching and good luck.
