Geocache Description:

This cache is located on the very corner of the park outside the fence on flat ground. Park in Brackenridge and walk to the cache. Brackenridge is closed from 11PM till 5 AM

Dr. Aureliano Urrutia (1870-1974), the son of Aztec Indians, was born into poverty near Mexico City. He attended military and medical school, receiving his medical degree in 1895. He established a large sanitarium, Sanatorio Urrutia, in Mexico known for its lavish gardens, fountains, and pavilions. During the Mexican Revolution Dr. Urrutia and his family left Mexico for the United States, arriving in San Antonio in August of 1914. He constructed a palatial estate, Quinta Urrutia, on a large tract of land along Broadway fronting the San Antonio River in what is now part of Brackenridge Park. The elaborate Moorish-style residence featured a courtyard, fountain, statuary, tile work, and stained glass. He purchased additional land in 1921, calling it Miraflores, that extended to Hildebrand Avenue and planned to build another palatial sanitarium. Although the sanitarium never materialized, Dr. Urrutia spent the next decade developing the grounds into private gardens filled with statuary, pools, fountains, and works of art.
There used to be two ornate, grand archways on the north edge of this property, by the roadside, leading nowhere, covered with colorful Mexican tile work. With a beautiful hand-painted image of the Virgin. On the top of the larger arch there was an oxidized bronze plaque that said DOCTOR URRUTIA. This park seems to be always closed but there is a new bridge in Brackenridge Park to it that could allow access . The cache is a log only micro bottle cap container.
