Geocache Description:

It has been moved due to muggles. The new container is stuffed kid friendly swag.

A small sized cache awaits you in Union Township. If you take some time to read over the related webpage it will make it more enjoyable.

Union Township was organized in May 1819 three years after Indiana became a state.

William Anthony is credited with establishing the first settlement across from Henderson or Red Banks, as it was then called. Mr. Anthony was a ferryman hence the settlement was known as Anthony's Ferry. His son James went to the front with the Union armies in 1861, made Captain and died in the service.

Joseph M. McDowell lived approximately four miles above Henderson and ran a tavern and inn at his home which was renown for its hospitality. His sons, Joseph P. and William G., "became well-known and useful citizens" According to Brant & Fuller's 1889 work "History of Vanderburgh County, Indiana"

The same work recounts the life of Old Man Flat "One of the most typical representatives of that class of easy-going, free-from-care pioneers, who rejoiced in the excitement of the chase, and ever loved to recount their exploits, was "old man Flat, the yarn-teller," as the settlers often spoke of him. His chief delight was to pass away time in spinning yarns, many of which had not a grain of truth in them. He was a hunter in the woods most of the time, and the owner of a vivid imagination. He kept many a fire-side circle laughing with good humor at his unreasonable stories, and thus served a useful purpose."

There were several churches built in the area and the town of Cypress had a post office, a blacksmith shop, and a small store. Several other crossroads had a small shop or “places of refreshment”

Now the pioneers, hunters & squatters are gone. The tavern, churches and ferry are gone replaced by cropland and well appointed farms. But standing here at the brink of nightfall I could have sworn I heard someone say "Hey did I tell ya about the time I went bear huntin’ with naught but a sharp stick and....."

Might have just been the breeze I guess.
