Lunatic Wall Traditional Cache

This cache has been archived.

winter spider: I am putting this cache out of commission. The wall is a great piece of history, but this is a hard place to maintain a cache. There may be some what to place a different cache here in the future. Winter Spider

Geocache Description:

A traditional cache along the old wall of the Provincial Lunatic Asylum.

In 1850 the Provincial Lunatic Asylum opened its doors on Queen Street West. It was the Province of Canada’s largest public, non-military building and was the first building specifically designed to be used as an asylum. Undergoing many updates and changes, this site hosted a provincial psychiatric hospital for more than 150 years. The Centre for Addiction and Mental Health was created in 1998 and now stands on this 27 acre site. It has both in-patient and out-patient programs.

All but a few of the old buildings were demolished in the 1970's, but much of the old wall that enclosed the asylum is still standing.

There is a lot of information on the history of the wall as well great historical photos of the asylum itself on the CAMH website at (visit link)
Follow the links for "Redevelopment of the Queen Street site" and "history".

There is a also self-guided walking tour of the grounds with plaques and old photos. It starts at 43° 38.670 79° 24.981 at the corner of Queen West and Shaw.

There is a gate to get in and out of the back part of the grounds at 43° 38.488 79° 25.256, as well as a plaque to read.

And of course, if you are in need of help with any kind of drug, alcohol, or gambling problem, you can walk into 60 White Squirrel Way (43° 38.576 79° 25.257) and ask the receptionist for information about the different treatment programs.
