Geocache Description:

You are looking for a small "pill fob" that contains only a log to sign. There is a spot to pull over your vehicle in order to get to this cache.

This micro cache is hidden at Paint Roack located in Waverly, TN. It contains only a logsheet. BYOP.

A large native village once flourished atop the bluff overlooking the Duck River near Paint Rock. This settlement was the epicenter of political, economic and cultural life for the people who lived in Humphreys County over eight centuries ago.

In 1894, digging at the Duck River site produced what has been called the most spectacular single collection of prehistoric Native American art ever discovered in the Eastern United States.

The cache included two human statues representing the community's ancestral founding couple along with nearly four dozen ceremonial stones, knives, daggers, swords, and other striking examples of prehistoric stonework. As sacred symbols of leadership, these objects were similiar, in many ways, to the crowns of European Monarchs.

Today, the products of these ancient artisians are the centerpieces of major museums throughout the country. The Duck River cache is on permanent display at the Mclung museum in Knoxville, TN.

A reminder of these early residents was left at Paint Rock where the figures of the half moon and seven stars were cut into the face of the rock. At a later date, the figures were painted red, giving rise to the name. These images have been there since the first European settlers arrived.

No one can be certain of what happened to the Woodlands and the Mississippian people who once lived in Humphreys County.
