The Lake and the Man: Lake Bernard Frank is a man-made reservoir in Derwood, Maryland. It is named after Bernard Frank, a wilderness activist and a founding member of The Wilderness Society. Frank worked for the Unites States Forest Service in the Department of Agriculture for more than 30 years. He was a leader in organizing the Rock Creek Watershed Association which worked to restore and preserve the area around Rock Creek in Washington, DC and Maryland. He participated with Justice William O. Douglas in the effort that lead to the creation of the Chesapeake and Ohio Canal National Historical Park.
The United States Forest Service is an agency of the United States Department of Agriculture that administers the nation's 155 national forests and 20 national grasslands, which encompass 193 million acres.
