Historic Totley #5 - Totley Memorial Traditional Cache

This cache has been archived.

Dalesman: This cache has been in need of care and maintenance for some time and as the owner has not responded to my note I am archiving it.

Guidelines: "You are responsible for occasional visits to your cache to maintain proper working order, especially when someone reports a problem with the cache (missing, damaged, wet, etc.). You may temporarily disable your cache to let others know not to search for it until you have a chance to fix the problem. This feature is to allow you a reasonable amount of time - normally a few weeks - in which to check on your cache. If a cache is not being maintained, or has been temporarily disabled for an unreasonable length of time, we may archive the listing."

If you wish to contact me about this cache please use my Email address below my signature and quote the GC number of the cache. Please note this system is not infallible and I may miss any such mail.

Geocache Description:

This cache is a medium-sized screwtop pot with room for a few swaps. It has a log and pencil included and is the fifth in the ‘Historic Totley’ series.

The Totley War Memorial is located on the north side of Baslow Road, between Lane Head and Hillfoot Road. It was erected to remember the 10 men from Totley who gave their lives in WW1 1914-1918.

Hundreds of cars pass by the memorial every day but its location is quite inconspicuous, so few people see the memorial unless they know where it is. Fewer still know anything about the 10 men whose lives were cut short when they left the quiet Derbyshire village in 1918 to engage in battle.

The Totley History Group has diligently researched the background of each soldier and found that they came from all walks of life – one was the youngest son of the family who lived at Totley Hall and another was a young farm labourer. Once a year on Remembrance Sunday there is a service and wreaths are laid.

If you want to know more you can find information uncovered by the Totley History Group at (visit link)

The 10 men were:

Sec. Lt. Roy Denzil Pashley Milner
Pte. Colin Hedley Bishop
Cpl. Tom Brown Fisher
Pte. James William Green
Sgt. Herbert Allan Hill
Pte. Robert Hugh Martin
Pte. Albert Pinder
Pte. James Parker
Pte. Charles Turner
Pte. Bernard Turner

The monument is set back from the footpath and is circumscribed by a stone wall. At the back of the monument are 2 brass plaques located behind a large stone cross placed in the centre. The cache should be an easy find - it is not actually in the monument site, but located just outside the perimeter wall in one of the corners.
