A view of Katharo plateau
Katharo plateau is on the Dikti mountain in the prefecture of Lassithi, It is 16 km from Kritsa village (asphalt road), and 12km from Mesa Lassithi (rough mountain road).
It is 4 km long, 1.5km wide and at an average altitude of 1150m above the sea level. Due to its altitude the plateau is not inhabitant in the winter, while in summer is have about 500 inhabitants mainly shepherds and a few taverns.
Katharo has a special property status and is essentially community-owned.
The fertile soil of the plateau is used for production of vegetables, potatoes and fruits.
The Katharo plateau also has special scientific interest, as paleontologist found fossils of dwarf elephant and hippos. To get the cache you can walk from Lassithi plateau and hike about 2 hours, or you can drive from Katharo plateau, but it is 4 km dirt road.
