Geocache Description:

Check out amazing maps of both Venice Beach and Venice, Italy, carved into the ground.

In 1999, the City of Los Angeles completed a massive ten year renovation of the Venice Beach Boardwalk. The city commissioned several local artists to create permanent art installations on the former site of the dilapidated Venice Pavilion, which was demolished as part of the reconstruction.

This map, carved and painted into the pavement of Ocean Front Walk (the Venice Boardwalk) at Windward Avenue, depicts the Venice Beach canals, then a long, wavy stretch of ocean, and then an accurate, beautiful rendering of the main canals of Venice, Italy.

Other cool sites in the vicinity:
1. The skateboard and roller skate parks are nearby, if you want to watch death defying tricks or fun roller skate dancing.
2. Poetry carved into the wall of the grey building on site features local Venice poets.
3. An amazing 60 ft tall steel sculpture by artist Mark di Suvero.
4. Fun playground with ocean views

Note: you will need to pay for parking, hunt for a meter spot, or, in the summer, be prepared to park a few blocks away and walk. Most of the meters in the area are only good for an hour, so if you want to enjoy Venice Beach, my advice is to hunt for free spaces a few blocks east.
