On November 8th, 2008, Circuit City Stores announced the immediate
liquidation and closure of 155 retail stores across the country.
#3671 in Freehold, NJ was among those slated for closure in an
effort to save the company from total bankruptcy.
I have a somewhat unique point of view on these events, since I
had put the previous 5 years of my life into that store as a sales
associate, computer technician, and manager.
The 155 stores were chosen based on financial viability, and it
is safe to say that Circuit City in Freehold, in its present
location, was NOT financially sound. Since the store had opened in
1998, plans were made regularly to move the store to somewhere else
in the area where it had a better chance of success.
While many plans never escalated past the drawing board, 2
possible locations made significant progress in planning and design
before being abruptly stopped by the closure of the store.
This cache is one of two in the Freehold Area that marks one of
the sites that would have saved 3671 from being part of the batch
of stores closed in order to save the rest.
