I apologise for the smell from the nearby farm if the wind is
unfavourable! I am also mindful that the general area is not very
"scenic" - it is hardly the most enchanting of spots.
This little series is generally accessible and ideal for winter
caching; by and large it avoids muddy trails and 'quaggy'
pathways.
Following on from Evil Edna's "Bentham - The Bogey" (GC24GGR) it
gives one an opportunity to explore the village and surrounding
area.
The village has some interesting geographical, archaeological and
historical features.
There is evidence of early earthworks and early settlement; one
cache celebrates the historic Gloster Aircraft Company works.
The village of Bentham is at the foot of Crickley Hill, site of an
Iron Age Hillfort; a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI and
a Scheduled Ancient Monument (SAM).
It is also close to the Ermin Way with its numerous Roman
associations.
There is more to this "unassuming" little village than meets the
eye.
The cache is placed very conveniently by the access road to the
nearby allotments; so it should be a fairly quick grab.
PLEASE put is back CAREFULLY.
It's about a foot (or so), of the ground.
The track-way to this is a Private Road BUT a Public
Footpath!
