This man was born in Indiana and dropped out of school before the 7th grade. He was the oldest child in a family of five. His father, a butcher, had died when he was very young and his mother had remarried. He ran away from home because of mistreatment by his stepfather and later enlisted in the US Army at the age of sixteen. He held many jobs throughout his life including farmer, tire salesman, insurance salesman, streetcar conductor and boat pilot. He had studied law and had acted in a film that included Richard Pryor. He had two daughters and a son who died at an early age. At one time he owned a service station and later moved to a motel/restaurant, where he worked as the chef. Due to new highway construction customer traffic at the restaurant was reduced and eventually caused the business to fail. He continued in the business world making millions and in 1965 moved to Ontario Canada. Later in life he created a Trust and a charitable organization which gave away millions of dollars in 2007. He was diagnosed with leukemia, but eventually died of pneumonia. More than 1,000 people attended his funeral service and he was inducted into a Hall of Fame 10 years after his death. He was well known for his style of dress and is recognizable worldwide.
