
Rotokakahi can be roughly translated as "lake of the shellfish" and was well used by local Maori in days gone by. Nowadays it is tapu (taboo, sacred) and its owners, Tuhourangi (Te Arawa iwi/tribe) are mostly leaving it alone.
The view of the lake when the air is still and the fir and redwood trees are reflected in the water remind me of my homeland of Canada.
January 2014: Car access from Green Lake Rd is now restricted by a shut gate. This is because the local authorities are sick of having to clean up after vandals and people illegally dumping rubbish. Pedestrian and bicycle access is allowed.
From the disused picnic area a well graded track will take you to the cache site. No need to go bush-bashing.
March 2017 update: The second 1.2L sistema chewed by rats in a year has just been replace by a sturdy and very rat-proof ammo can! Location is now 24m away from the original to allow enough space for the bigger container.
