On 22nd November 1797 the Preston to Tewitfield section of the Lancaster Canal was officially opened and a grand celebration was held to mark the occasion.
The cache is hidden at the Tewitfield terminus. The canal ended here until 1819 and in 1968, with the building of the M6, it again became the terminus. Tewitfield has visitor moorings, sanitary station, pub and nearby campsite. North of the terminus on the other side of the road blockage, are the eight disused Tewitfield Locks.
I recommend the walk up the locks where you can take in a couple of other caches Three manxies and a taff and 8 Locks and no keys
Since its formation in 1963 as the Association for the Restoration of the Lancaster Canal, the Trust’s main objective has been to restore, and reopen to navigation the length of the canal from Tewitfield to Kendal. You can find more history and information of the plans for restoration on the Lancaster Canal Trust Webiste
The towpath opposite the cache is a popular walking route for muggles and the nearby facilities block may be busy with boaters in the summer months so stealth is required. Please re-hide well.
We often moor around here in the summer. If you see a cruiser called "Bluebird" moored nearby, don't worry, it's only us. Give us a wave or come and ask for a clue if you need one.
Bluebird is now a trackable boat. Pop over and make a note of our tacking code and log your find.
