Градът и районът са с богато минало, чието начало започва от V? хилядолетие пр.Хр. Животът в него продължава без прекъсване до наши дни и минава през различни епохи, които са оставили многобройни веществени доказателства. През 1907 г. възниква идеята за основаване на археологическо дружество, което да създаде местен музей, в който да се показват съхранените реликви от близкото и далечното минало. През 1912 г. е построена специална сграда за градска библиотека и музей. Нея музея обитава повече от 35 години. Голяма заслуга за развитието на музея по онова време имат уредниците Атанас Кожухаров и Христо Райков.
Стотици са изложбите, които музеят урежда през изминалите години. Те са посветени на различни теми. Повечето са уредени в Стара Загора, а с други музеят гостува в различни градове на страната. Старозагорски експонати често са включвани в изложби в чужбина – в Канада, Германия, Япония, Австрия, Италия, САЩ, Русия, Чехия и др
През 2007 година, когато се отбеляза вековния му юбилей, музеят се настани в нова, специално строена за него сграда..
The town and the region have a rich past, whose beginning is dated back to the 6th millennium B.C. Life here has been going on without interruption until to date and passes through different epochs, leaving multiple artifacts. In 1907 it was decided to create an archaeological society in order to found a local museum for displaying the preserved relicts from the near and distant past.
In 1912 a special building was constructed for the town library and the museum. It has hosted the museum for more than 35 years.
Hundreds of expositions have been set up by the museum in the past years. They have been devoted to different subjects. Most of them were arranged in Stara Zagora, and with others the museum has visited different towns in the country. Exponents from Stara Zagora have often been included in expositions abroad – in Canada, Germany, Japan, Austria, Italy, USA, Russia, the Czech Republic, etc.
In 2007, during it's centennial jubilee, the museum was accommodated in a new building, built especially for that purpose. In the last two years, its activity has been focused on the development of the thematic concept for the new exposition and on popularizing the cultural inheritance of the region.
