Sunday Morning Hiking Series #19 - Killyons
(Pinecrest) Trail
8am-12pm
Series Description
For those new to this hiking series, these are social hikes
around the Salt Lake area for the purpose of caching, enjoying the
outdoors, and getting to know fellow cachers. There tends to be a
range of fitness levels that show up for the hikes. As the emphasis
is on being social, don't worry if a steep leaves you puffing. I'll
be right there clinging to a tree and puffing with you. Our usual
meeting time is 8am, and we leave the parking area by 8:05am. The
other primary feature of these hikes is that they are short and can
be accomplished by noon. Trails tend to be a little emptier on
Sunday mornings and we'll be done in time for anyone who has Sunday
obligations to attend an afternoon service. If you don't have to be
anywhere in the afternoon, there's frequently a longer trail to
take. If you would like more information about the whole series of
hikes, check out the others in the series in the bookmark list at
the right.
Description for this Hike
I'm really looking forward to this one. It's been my plan since
I first hiked the area last April. It is a beautiful area year
round. The huge pines covered in snow should really be something.
It's always so peaceful up, I'm curious to experience it with the
added quieting of snow.
This area this time of year will definitely require snowshoes.
If you don't own any, most sports stores in the area rent them. If
you want to try it without (not recommended) there should be enough
people with snowshoes to break and pack the trail a bit. You'll
just have to walk at the back of the pack. It will also depend on
recent snowfall. Be sure to keep an eye on the page the day before.
It is possible if we get a big dump this area might not be
accessible. Posting a "will attend" log will ensure you get any
announcement I post as an email.
Dogs are welcome in the area. However, the snow can be deep.
Cocoa and cider will be served after the hike.
