Waharau extends from the gravelly shore of the Firth of Thames
(Tikapa Moana) into the eastern foothills of the Hunua Ranges. The
coastal part of this park lies between the Waharau Stream in the
north and sandy Waihihi Bay in the south. Waharau is the eastern
gateway to the Hunua Ranges.
A series of loop tracks explore the foothills of the Hunua
Ranges and link to some of the more rugged tramping tracks in the
ranges.
ACTIVITIES
On Saturday 5th February 2011, group walks will be held on
these link routes. The are in various lengths to suit every
ability. There might be some new caches along those routes by
then......
The more keen walkers can complete the largest loop, which leads
you over the Mangatangi ridge track, “1000 Acre
clearing” to the summit of the Kohukohunui which with 688 m
is the highest point of the Auckland region. Close to the summit is
the historic "Trig K Hut" dating from 1946. On the way back you
pass the the Adams look out with great views over the Firth of
Thames. Be aware that this is a significant day-walk which took us
8.5 hours (in the winter). There are a couple of caches to do on
that route as well. (visit
