Geocache Description:

Ammo can with a log and trade items at the Arbuckle Council's Camp Simpson.

For the past 70 years, first-year campers at Camp Simpson have been terrified by stories of a monster which emerges from a pool of water know as the Witch Hole on camp property. Barely 100 feet in diameter, legend states that the depth of the pool is undetermined. The mystery surrounding the Witch Hole has led to inclusion as a point of interest labeled on the U.S. Geological Survey map of the area (Connerville NE Quadrangle).

Is there actually a monster that emerges at night to devour young children? Can you actually hear her scream as she moves about the woods in search of pre-pubescent prey? Who can say for sure? Although I cannot say that I have actually seen the monster, I may have felt her presence, her watching eyes, as I placed this cache. I do know that I constantly felt sharp claws (teeth?) tearing at my clothes, trying to restrain me, as I walked toward the hiding place for the cache! I managed to place the cache and return safely, aided by a magic Garmin talisman.

Should you decide to enter the domain of the Witch Hole Monster, you are seeking an ammo box with a log, a T-Shirt, various small trade items and a “Celebrating 100 years of Scouting” geocoin. The terrain is rocky, wet and slippery in places, and full of dense undergrowth. The area around the cache boasts an abundance of poison ivy, green briar, blackberry bushes, ticks, mosquitoes, copperheads and water moccasins ( I mean the venomous Agkistrodon piscivorous, not the harmless water snake everybody calls a water moccasin). Winter months make for easier trekking, though it is still not recommended for small children.

Boy Scouts should not attempt this without first informing an adult leader, and then should only go with at least 2 other people.

PLEASE NOTE: This cache is unavailable during the month of June and the week of December 24-31 due to scheduling of scout activities. Cachers found at the camp during these times will be escorted off the grounds and any finds logged will be deleted by the cache’s owner.

As a courtesy, please call Gene, the camp ranger, at 580-638-2388 prior to coming out. He is geocacher-friendly and quite helpful.

CONGRATULATIONS TO THEBIRDNERD FOR FTF!!!
